After finishing my lunch, I cleaned up before returning to the front counter and checking the dessert in the glass case. The cafe served a small variety of sandwiches and salads, but was known for its coffee and pastries. My favorite was the banana nut muffin. Not to brag, but I made some amazing ones. I dreamed of opening my own cafe someday. A safe place for people to relax with a delicious coffee and sweet treat while escaping into the pages of a book. A dream was probably all it would ever be. The front door swung open as two girls walked inside. A spring breeze blew in behind them, rustling the napkins on the counter. One ordered a non-fat vanilla latte, and the other wanted an iced mocha with oat milk. Are you going to the festival tonight? Vanilla asked as they waited. Marcus wants to go, oat milk responded. But I don't know yet, isn't it more for kids? Fully aware I was eavesdropping but not caring, I listened as I worked on their drinks. I vaguely recalled hearing something about a spring festival downtown. It had started earlier that day and would go into the night. There will be rides, food, and all that good stuff. Vanilla whipped out her phone, and her fingers moved at lightning speed as she texted. For kids or not, I don't care, I want a funnel cake. Funnel cake did give a huge incentive to go. But then I thought about the crowds of people and noise and promptly changed my mind. Besides, I had a hot date that night with a sword wielding ex-soldier turned assassin named Aiden. Canceling on him was out of the question.
